It has been a while since I have written, but am back again. Had a great time with our grandson, Andrew, a couple of weeks ago. Sure do miss the little guy.

Around church, summer activites are in full swing. A group of 45 are completing a week in New Orleans (our 4th such Katrina trip in recent months) and will return to SF early next week. I am so very proud of First B in responding so lovingly and sacrificially to the tragedy in the South. A strong relationship has been fostered with the St. Charles Avenue Baptist Church in N.O. that will last on. Lives have been touched there and here. I give thanks to the good people at First B who have given financially, personally, and prayerfully in our response.

Also, VBS is just around the corner. This is a marvelous opportunity each summer to make a difference in the lives of children and families. In these few short days, a great deal of Bible study and learning will take place. Friendships will be developed and a lot of fun will be had. And most of all, there will be children who will come to Christ during VBS. Lives will be changed forever. What a great joy!

Talk later. LM

Pastor Lee,
It was such a blessing to have Andrew in the service a couple of weeks ago. What a miracle he truly is. Definitely a display of God's love and grace right here on earth. I also wanted to comment on the "Fact or Fiction" series you have been preaching. Having not read the book "The DaVinci Code", I decided to see the movie anyway and I walked away considering it pure entertainment and no more a threat to my faith than any other worldly thing that crosses my path daily. I have so appreciated how you have approached your sermons. Noticing that there are a vast amount of churches across the country that have decided to do a sermon series on the book/movie...I was a bit apprehensive to have the church I attend be part of that group. I just didn't want to see us spend too much time focusing on the book and movie when there are far more pressing issues with which to be dealt. I have been blessed that First Baptist has approached it with little mention of the book, but moreso with the evangelical perspective of knowing the truth versus the fiction and more importantly using that truth AGAINST the fiction in order to reach the world for Christ. Thanks for the way you have carefully approached this "Hollywood Phenomenon"!!
Blessings,
Dawn

I wonder how one can gauge the spiritual climate of a juggernaut work of fiction (DaVinci Code) that draws from historical roots? Albeit warps them to its own conventions but, never the less, it has a spiritual impact by the very interests it draws upon? How much and whether it affects the church would be an interesting thing to find out (I'm sure Barna has taken a crack at that - he does with everything else). Same goes for the Passion of the Christ now that it is almost two years past the media-hype. My question may be more on the lines of what has the church done to further the dialogue brought on by these cultural connections and does the "world" see the church as a more valid voice or a more dis-connected voice in their wake?
Maybe we live in such an information drenched spinning cogwheel that taking the time to digest deeper and longer is our malady. No doubt, next month we will be onto the next big thing that grabs our atttention as a society.
Just some thoughts on our pace and practice as Christians, and even my own shortcomings when dealing with these spiritual opportunities.
